A number of French media executives have been suspended or fired for allegedly co-ordinating on-line harassment via a personal Fb group.

The largely-male League du LOL (League of LOL) focused ladies writers and feminist activists amongst others.

Dozens of individuals have shared their expertise of cyber-bullying by the group because it was uncovered by the French left-wing newspaper Libération.

Two Libération journalists are amongst these suspended.

One, freelancer Vincent Glad who based the group in 2009, apologised on Twitter (in French), saying that he now realised that “such practices had been unacceptable and ‘LOL’ was not humorous in any respect when it’s achieved in a pack”.

Utilizing largely nameless Twitter accounts, members of the group mocked fellow journalists – lots of whom had been ladies. In addition they made rape jokes, and shared photos of people photoshopped over pornographic photos.

Outstanding journalists and writers together with Nora Bouazzouni, Slate France reporter Lucile Bellan, and podcaster Mélanie Wanga all say they had been focused by the League of LOL.

In a tweet, science presenter Florence Porcel stated that a group member referred to as her cellphone, posing as an editor of a “distinguished” information programme.

He interviewed her for a non-existent job and shared the audio of their dialog. “When the recording was made public, I cried of disgrace for 3 days,” stated Porcel.

David Doucet, editor of French journal Les Inrockuptibles, confessed to being behind the interview and publicly apologised to Ms Porcel.

Others implicated within the scandal embrace senior journalists and executives from main retailers together with Slate France and public relations agency Publicis.

In a tweet, Libération’s on-line editor Alexandre Hervaud issued an apology for his involvement, however in a later publish he attacked “those that soar with pleasure” at his predicament.

Liberation have suspended each Hervaud and Glad pending an inner investigation.

France’s minister for digital affairs, Mounir Mahjoubi, has described members of the “League of LOL” as “losers”.
